A number of these flies were observed trying to obtain pupae from a colony of ants that were moving over open ground. This behavior is called Kleptoparasitism, but can simply be thought of as theft. But it might not be brute force mugging. These flies have been observed flicking ants carrying no food, possibly to acquire scent off these ants so that the ants might voluntarily give up their bounty to what they, through smell, are interpreting as an assisting member of their own colony.
