This bull rhino was killed by another in a territorial fight. A carcass of this size inevitably attracts a multitude of scavengers from far and wide. The hyenas had gorged themselves, and could hardly eat anything more, but actively chased the vultures of the kill, trying to save as much of the remaining meat as possible for a later feed. Although they compete, they often rely on each other in many ways: the eyes of the circling vultures may have helped the hyenas detect this carcass. The powerful jaws of the hyenas would have been crucial in opening the carcass for the vultures to feed. | ||
