One of the saddest days of my guiding career. Although we adhered in most cases to a strict non-interference policy, we tried desperately to help this giraffe. In my time at Londolozi we saw a number of giraffe slipping while trying to cross the Sand River. Every time we tried as best we could to help them out, rarely with success. It is a dangerous process trying to get ropes around such an enourmous creature while it thrashes about, and I once watched the massive neck come crashing down an inch away from a comrade's head. As guide Boyd Varty mentions, the misfortune of one animal provides life for many others. | ||
